At Callington Community College, it is our aim to develop and foster a love for Mathematics.  We are a committed and enthusiastic department who wish to stimulate interest in the subject with enthusiasm and passion. We believe students will excel when they discover concepts for themselves, and flourish when they develop and build on these.

At Callington, we ensure that Mathematics provides opportunities for students to work collaboratively and independently, with an emphasis on problem solving and deepening thinking skills.

Key Stage 3

Throughout Key Stage 3 students are encouraged to develop their mathematical thinking. They will build on skills and knowledge gained from Key Stage 2 and deepen these further. Throughout the Mathematics course students will be taught to develop fluency, reason mathematically and solve problems.

All students have access to  www.vle.mathswatch.com/vle which offers additional support that can be accessed outside of the classroom to complement in class learning or to extend mathematical skills. Students also have access to www.sparxmaths.uk to complete their homework and complete optional tasks.

Key Stage 4

All students follow Edexcel GCSE (9-1) in Mathematics. The course emphasises and encourages the sound understanding of concepts, fluency in procedural skill, competency to apply mathematical skills and confidence in mathematical problem solving.

There are two tiers of entry, higher and foundation. Higher tier covers grades from 9-4 and the foundation 5-1. Students begin studying for a tier in year 9 however the final level of entry is determined in year 11.

The course is assessed by three examinations, two calculator and one non calculator, all of which have a duration of one and half hours.

All students have access to www.vle.mathswatch.com/vle, which offers additional support that can be accessed to complement in class learning or to extend mathematical skills.

Key Stage 5

AS and A-Level Mathematics aims to deepen and extend the techniques and concepts discovered at GCSE. The course encourages students to think, act and communicate mathematically, providing them with the skills to analyse situations in mathematics and elsewhere. Content includes in-depth treatments of calculus and proof, alongside statistics and mechanics, preparing students for a wide range of destinations in Higher Education and employment.

Higher Education and Career Opportunities

Mathematics at A Level is a fascinating, rewarding and satisfying subject and forms the basis for many other subjects.  It is highly regarded by employers and Higher Education establishments, with many degrees containing some elements of mathematics.

Careers in Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, Business, Economics, Geography and Design, amongst many others, will benefit from mathematical studies at a high level.
