Friday Band "World Tour"

On 11 July 2017 the College’s “Friday Band” went on a “World Tour” around two of our feeder primary schools.

The Friday Band is a wind ensemble consisting of students from all year groups in the College.  The band went to St. Dominic and Pensilva primary schools, with the aim of encouraging the year five and year six students to engage with music once up at the College, and whilst still in primary school.

Altogether, the band played eight well known pieces, which were received with a lot of clapping and cheers.  The pieces included film tracks such as Ghostbusters and Pirates Of The Caribbean, as well as other well known songs like Thriller and Mambo No. 5. The Year 9 GCSE band also performed two songs for the students.  They performed Fleetwood Mac’s The Chain and a composition called Now or Never composed by Finn Hilsdon (year 9).

However, the tour was not just about performing to them.  In between the pieces, the students got to learn about all the different instruments that make up a wind band, and they got to hear how each instrument sounds, with little extracts such as Let It Go, The Simpsons, and Jingle Bells. The students at the primaries were a fantastic audience who engaged with the musicians and the music.

It wouldn’t have been a band trip without a lot of fun.  This included some interesting performances of some well known songs, and an all out laughter filled day, not mention the cake and fizz to end the day back at the College.

The ‘Friday Band World Tour’ was a huge success, with lots of questions being asked, including “How long does it take to learn the Saxophone?” and a new generation of potential musicians being inspired. A massive well done to all the students who played fantastically and performed at their highest standard for the two one-hour long shows, and for the professional and efficient way in which all the students helped set up and pack down the equipment for the performances.
